Hermitage — General's Retreat

Two courses on the Cumberland River: one hosted the LPGA's Sara Lee Classic for 12 years, the other winds through wetlands. Yes, there are sheep.

About Hermitage — General's Retreat

Hermitage has two 18s on the Cumberland River in Old Hickory. General's Retreat came first, built in 1986 with architect Gary Roger Baird, and it hosted the LPGA Sara Lee Classic every year from 1988 to 1999. President's Reserve followed in 2001, a Denis Griffiths design that runs through 300 acres of wetlands along the river and stretches to about 7,200 yards. Across the property the tees run from 5,138 to 7,157 yards, and there are 114 bunkers on 467 acres.

The thing everybody mentions is the sheep. A flock of Scottish Blackface sheep has roamed both courses since 2012, a nod to golf's roots in Scotland, and they're now the club's mascot; the homepage puts the count at 55. The club has also hosted the 2013 ISPS Handa Cup, the Special Olympics North America Games and state amateur events.

If you want to make a trip of it, there are eight cottages built in 2016 and two lodges added in 2025, with their own putting green and fire pit.

It's one of 4 courses in Old Hickory on Yoink, and Hermitage — President's Reserve is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
